Juicing 101 (part 1)

This terrific women introduced me to juicing. I was very hesitant and wondered how I would integrate this type of food preparation into my diet. Well, I finally broke down and ordered my juicer. I got this one from Amazon for $90. Not overly expensive and a good bang for the buck for someone just starting out and giving juicing a whirl.

In my quest to be healthier, I tend to research things a whole lot. While I don't want to juice for every meal, every day, forever.......... I do want to increase my vegetable intake for a healthier me. I have a difficult time getting the hubby to eat vegetables and I hope that I can find some good tasting recipes that he will be willing to drink.

If you ask any person who has juiced for a long time and they’ll tell you that you’ll get better looking skin simply because you’re taking in more nutrients that your body needs to regenerate damaged cells and at the same time flush out toxins that can degrade your skin. You can increase your hydration with vegetables like celery and cucumbers. There are a number of benefits to juicing.

To give you a brief overview here are just some of the benefits:

  • Reduce the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease and inflammatory diseases

  • Boost the immune system

  • Remove toxins

  • Weight loss

If someone would say eating fruit or vegetable is healthier because you get all the fiber, think about how would you feel after eating a whole Fuji apple?

Follow that up with two carrots or a couple stalks of celery, you might throw up.

I guess you get the picture. Juicing cuts digestion out of the way and allows your body to take in more nutrients without stuffing yourself.

In addition to the juicer, I ordered 6 of these 18oz glass jars with twist lids and sleeves. Everything I've read says to drink your juice withing 15 minutes of making it. I know that will not happen, so I read some more and found that the juice will keep refrigerated in an air tight glass container for 48-72 hours. I hope to be able to make a few days worth without having to prepare my juice each day.

I then went shopping for the ingredients in the recipes I've found, with the exception of Kale (thyroid disrupter).

I am ready to get started! I am looking forward to adding super herbs like ginger and turmeric to the mix in order to reduce inflammation and keep my immune system healthy. I also ordered some organic frozen Aronia berries. Aronia berry is higher in the nutrients like Vitamin K, C, manganese, and copper. Aronia Berry also contains a healthy dose phyto-nutrients, calcium, Vitamin E, Potassium, Iron and Zinc while the blueberry does not.

Aronia Berry has at least three times the antioxidant power (free radical fighting compounds) of blueberry. In fact, on the USDA ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) Scale (a scale used to measure the antioxidant levels in various fruits, vegetables and herbs) aronia out-performed blueberry:

  • 100g of blueberry scaled at 4669

  • 100g of the Aronia Berry scaled at 16,062
